The Charlie Bernhaut Collection of Jewish and Cantorial Music
The American Society for Jewish Music’s Charlie Bernhaut Collection of Jewish and Cantorial Music contains more than 15,000 recordings dating from the early twentieth century to the present day. Not only is the process of complete digitization moving ahead, including the recordings, covers, labels and liner notes, but all of this material is also about to become part of a comprehensive, searchable online database which will set a new standard for recorded collections in its capacity to easily access information about each item in the collection.
The Charlie Bernhaut Collection of Jewish and Cantorial Music is housed at the Center for Jewish History, and that its searchable database will be the most comprehensive source for Jewish and, particularly, cantorial music, which is the Collection's greatest strength. Moreover, the Bernhaut Collection database will form the nucleus of an even larger project initiated by the American Society for Jewish Music entitled The Database of Jewish Music Sound Recordings.
